The History of FLAG
When I came to Converse in the fall of 2000, on the eve of the new millenium, I found out about FLAG at our informational fair. Since I had a bunch of gay/lesbian friends, I thought it would be a good idea to join. However, I found out that they had a reputation of being just a "gay club" that had "meetings" by sitting around and (allegedly) smoking organic substances of an illegal nature. The only active thing that truly happened that year was when they chalked the sidewalks right before Family Weekend. The wrote the names of famous gays, including some that were highly controversial. Most people got really angry at FLAG.

My sophomore year, there was a change in leadership. There were only a few members, and I was really only a nominal one. I kinda started to get involved towards the end of the year. Mostly everyone sat around and discussed what could be done. Everyone knew that things needed to change, but ...

Last year (my junior year), FLAG made leaps and bounds. We had our very first recognition of National Coming Out Day on October 11th. We made rainbow links that could be worn either on backpacks or as bracelets as well as putting out dining hall table "tents" (fliers bent in half like a tent so they'll stand up). Some of us even wore home-made t-shirts. We had a great response! Several faculty and staff members, including the dean of students, congratulated us on a tastefully done awareness campaign.

Senior Year update! We had a cinema series in October, showing But I'm a Cheerleader, As Good as it Gets, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. We recognized National Coming Out Day again. We also got the library display from Oct. 15-Nov. 15 and have received a very positive response.
Next year, we hope to have more connections with the GLBT and PFLAG community in the upstate as well as nationally. I'm working on it ... :)
